A railroad client accumulated over 5,000 wooden ties through routine track and tie maintenance and replacement, which were sitting in two stockpiles. In order to properly dispose of these waste materials, they must be evaluated and classified as hazardous or non-hazardous so proper disposal technologies could be used.
Solution
To conduct the evaluation and classification, Antea Group developed a strategy and methodology to collect representative samples of wood ties from the two stockpiles. The team also utilized certified laboratories where other qualified experts could evaluate the samples for hazardous materials.
Result
The application of a thoughtful and rigorous sampling program allowed the client to develop a waste management program appropriate for the stockpile of ties, which was also in compliance with the federal, state, and local environmental requirements.
