EHS Assessments for Film Production Set Locations

Challenge

The Client, a film and television production company, was referred to Antea Group through an existing partnership and was requesting an initial fast-burn, high-level environment, health, and safety (EHS) assessment of potential set locations in a town located in Oklahoma. The existing structures that were under consideration for use ranged in occupancy and construction type and planned use for the production shoot. Assessments needed to be completed on notice with an accelerated abatement schedule to keep pace with production needs. Due to changes in production location and filming schedule, additional locations were added on.

Upon selection of specific sites, the client requested limited structural and environmental assessments to ensure the health and safety of the actors and production crew. Our local, in-state partner was brought in to identify specific environmental hazards such as lead paint, asbestos, and biological hazards. Remediation approaches suitable for filming needs (e.g., short duration occupancy, presence of children, etc.) were evaluated, agreed to with production personnel, and immediately coordinated with a local remediation partner to ensure meeting the production schedule.

Additional ad hoc production needs were also supported, including identifying controls for production properties impacted by historical contamination as well as by local livestock operations.

Solution

Antea Group provided a multi-tiered support system to the production company. A Health and Safety Consultant participated in daily production meeting calls on top of providing initial on-site set location evaluation. Other Antea Group Consultants, Project Managers, and Project Professionals provided additional support in terms of site investigation, sampling, remediation coordination, and oversight, as well as recommended best practices to eliminate identified hazards.

Result

Assessments of approximately 21 different locations were completed in a short period of time. Antea Group was able to help the client maintain their identified production schedule to safely utilize the selected set locations, as well as proactively identify location properties for which abatement of environmental concerns would be cost-prohibitive as compared to the duration of filming. Antea Group also managed all aspects of the pre-production sampling and remediation.
